The amazing David Shrigley

David Shrigley is one of my favourite artist, He is simply amazing, his humour, his sarcasm is really clever. I will show you some sentences from a interview with colour magazine, Canada 2007.

“I understand that, since you were young, your drawings have always been somewhat violent and odd. What do you think draws you to black comedy?

I am a nasty person with a sense of humour.

Most of your work, aside from maybe the animations, tends to function like one-liners. How do you know when you’ve hit on a good one? Do you think calling your work “visual jokes” is too reductive? What makes a joke a good joke?

I guess the test of a joke is whether it is funny or not. If people laugh then it’s funny. I’m not really so interested in telling jokes as such. Most of the time I’m trying to be serious.

Having done music videos for Blur and Bonnie Prince Billy, the art for Deerhoof’s new album, and having your spoken word pieces on Late Night Tales compilations by Four Tet and the Flaming Lips (to say nothing of Worried Noodles), your work is getting to have a strong association with music. Do you think that your work has particular properties that endear it to the indie-rock crowd?

It’s hard to say really. I really like music. It is a very important part of my life. Perhaps music needs some of my pictures in the same way as I need music.

What kind of music have you been listening to lately? Does music inspire your work any major ways?

Lately I have been listening to the recent John Fahey box set on Table of The Elements. It’s very good working music. I also like to listen to Merzbow when I’m working. I didn’t realize that Fahey was really into Merzbow at the end of his life. It really makes sense when I listen to his later recordings. Generally I make drawings to music that doesn’t have much lyrical content. When I’m doing things that don’t require any thought I like to listen to other stuff. I’m a big fan of The Fall.

The term “faux naive” gets tossed around in reference to a lot of contemporary art and illustration, but I think that, whereas a lot of the time, it’s used to generate an aesthetic of nostalgia or cuteness, any naivete of style in your work tends to confront more unsettling issues: marginality, insanity, the infantility of mass culture, so on. Any thoughts?

To draw in the way that I do as a result of a process of reduction. I want to say things as quickly and directly as possible. Whilst I suppose my drawing has become a style I never intended it to be so.”

Silvio Berlusconi the rocknrolla

rolling stones silvio

rolling stones silvio

Silvio the rocknrolla, this year, the Rolling Stone magazine gave the title of ‘rock star of the year’ to Silvio Berlusconi. The magazine said that Berlusconi deserve it because of his ‘lifestyle worthy of the greatest rock star’. They said too that is an ambiguous and ironic tribute. We can say that rock stars have envy his life style, money, power (owner of AC Milan soccer club, of some italian tv chanels), a lot of girls ( the case of Noemi Letizia, the call girl Patrizia D’Addario, the beautiful ministers ladies, and much more), the parties with naked girls, the jokes and scandals he made in public, and a extensive list of things that made him what he all know.

The director of Rolling Stone magazine said:

‘This year the choice was unanimous, for his obvious merits due to a lifestyle for which the words “rock ‘n roll” fall short. Rod Stewart, Brian Jones, Keith Richards in their prime were schoolboys compared to him.’ What we can think about this? That everyone is crazy in let someone like him be prime minister. Are the Italian people crazy in electing him for two times? Maybe. The true is that he is not the only bad guy with important responsabilities in world governments. We can see that in all countries have people like Berlusconi, the last president of America was the incredible George W. Bush, are the Italians more crazy than us. I don´t think so, but some times as the nobel prize José Saramago wrote in his book “Blindness” sometimes people are afected for some kind of social blindness.

Swiss installation and sound artist Zimoun

Zimoun : Sound Sculptures & Installations | Compilation Video V1.3 from ZIMOUN VIDEO ARCHIVE on Vimeo.

This video show us some works from Swiss installation and sound artist Zimoun. I discovered it some days ago and I thought he was a very interesting artist. If you try to imagine be inside the room with his sound installations, you can imagine a very interesting and exciting experience. He take it to another level of experince. It is not just the object, but his movement and sound.

Movement was introduced in sculpture long time ago, the first one I remember was Marcel Duchamp with his bicycle wheel, and with that starts the kinetic art. It was the first because the bicycle wheel as the first sculpture with the possibility of movement integrated, because other sculptures were simply static.
The bicycle wheel just start move if someone push the wheel. In the next years, artists start to introduce mechanical devices to introduce mechanical movement at their sculptures.

Nowadays, some sculptures are made with movement and sound, but the interesting thing in Zimoun is the way he puts these two elements together to creat an environment.Other interesting thing is his reductionist approach and careful yet radical handling of materials. One exemple of this is is sound installation based on live sounds of woodworms, and it is at the same time poetic because the woodworms movement is invisible to our eyes, and is visibility is given by the sound capture with the microfone of the woodworms.

The new masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola, “Tetro”

Yesterday I have seen a film with a really amazing history, maybe the most beautiful I´ve seen last times. The film was about the story of a family with some problems about the rivalry that success sometimes brings to our lifes. This family will have problems with rivalry in the relation of two brothers and in the relation father
and son. As all good stories, this one will have some events that will change the course of the characters life. It all starts when Bennie visits his brother Angie, when the ship taht he is working is stoped for fix the motor. During his visit old family stories start to emerge with the conversations with his brother Angie, that now wants people call him Tetro. Tetro runned away from his family, and now with his brother Bennie in his house, the older family issues will take tragical proportions.

I don´t know if you have discovered the name of movie I´m talking about. I´m talking about the last film made by the same director of “The Godfather”, Francis Ford Coppola, and his name is “Treto”. The story isn´t the only great thing, the actors are amazing to, you can see the great Vincent Gallo, the beautiful Maribel Verdú, Alden Ehrenreich, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Carmen Maura.
